Nearly all fish in the US are still contaminated by mercury. Here's what you need to know

Researchers have been sounding the alarm for years, but the US still has a big mercury pollution problem.

It's one of the most concerning chemicals for human health

The Greenland Ice Sheet is leaking mercury -- likely natural, but still dangerous

It raises the possibility that other melting glaciers are behaving the same way.

Thawing Canadian Arctic permafrost is releasing "substantial amounts" of mercury into waterways

In the Canadian Arctic, mercury isn't rising only in thermometers.

There are vast quantities of mercury in the permafrost. With global warming, it's now seeping away

Taking a look into Mercury's dark secrets

When the MESSENGER spacecraft found carbon rich material on Mercury, researchers were surprised and couldn't quite explain the source. Now, they believe that the material may be the remnants of a primordial graphite crust, which would also explain why Mercury looks darker than expected.

First biological function of mercury discovered

Purple Non Sulfur Bacteria may play a role in reducing the amount of methyl-mercury in the oceans by converting it to a less harmful form.Sincerely,

Mercury has magnetic field, astronomers report

The MESSENGER spacecraft spent four years orbiting Mercury, gathering valuable information and sending it back to Earth. But even in its final moments, as it crashed towards the surface of the planet, the spacecraft still did its job - it reported that Mercury has a magnetic field, likely millions of years old.

Mercury Level in Tuna Reaching Alarming Levels

The Mercury level in tuna has been a subject of debate for decades now. Paul Drevnick, Assistant Research Scientist at University of Michigan and his team analyzed data from over the past 50 years and found that mercury levels in Pacific yellowfin tuna, often marketed as ahi tuna, is increasing at 3.8% per year. If 3.8% per year doesn't seem like much, that translates into a doubling at every 20 years. So in 50 years, mercury levels have increased 6 times.

Now's your chance to name craters on Mercury

If you’ve always wanted to choose the name of stuff from outer space but never got the chance… now’s your time to shine! NASA is offering you the chance to name one of the craters of Mercury in honour of the MESSENGER mission, which is nearing its final days. Apply or Vote HERE. NASA, together with Johns […]

Mercury content of upper oceans has tripled since Industrial Revolution

Scientists have finished analyzing water samples taken from 12 oceanographic cruises from the past 8 years. Among other startling discoveries, they report that the mercury content in the upper oceans has tripled since the Industrial Revolution began. Interestingly enough, this is the first time we have an accurate, systematic global distribution of mercury in oceans. […]

Mercury iron might be the result of cosmic collision

The Earth contains a lot of iron, but it is not alone in the solar system in that aspect. Venus, Mars, the Moon and asteroids such as Vesta all have iron in their structure, but Mercury is the champion in that aspect: about 70 percent of its mass is iron! Now, researchers believe they have […]

Environmental rule regulating mercury emissions saves lives (and $90 billion)

Can you put a cost on pollution? Policy makers, not matter how some may deny it, are more astute than they were a few decades ago about subjects like climate change or global warming. Few can deny the adverse effects of immediate particle pollution on health, but whenever environmental regulations were put forth on the […]

Water ice discovered on Mercury's north pole

The fist planet from the sun is the unlikeliest place you’d expect to find water ice, but new tantalizing evidence beamed back by the Messenger spacecraft orbiting Mercury suggests just so. On the surface of Mercury, temperatures can reach boiling 752º Fahrenheit (400ºC), clearly water in any state can not exist.  At its poles,  however, things take a […]

Alarmingly high mercury concentrations in the Arctic might be due to Siberian rivers

Besides ever thinning ice, permafrost melting, soot deposits, habitat loss, you might as well add another significant factor threatening the arctic ecosystem – mercury. For some time, the alarmingly high mercury concentrations in the regions were rather unaccounted for, in part, however a new research by scientists at Harvard’s Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling Group suggests that […]

New toxic coal ash pollutant sites listed by environmental group

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in collaboration with the  independent Environmental Integrity Project, have identified 20 new sites in the US contaminated with toxic coal ash, raising the number to a current total of 157 sites nationwide, whose water supplies and soil ares contaminated. Coal ash is the waste which results from coal combustion, filled […]

Mercury in the highlight for NASA

The planet closest to the sun is very hot, yet very cold at the same time. It may even be a bit icy. The Mercury Messenger spacecraft entered the planet’s orbit on March 17, and since then, NASA has showed some of the pictures taken by it, which are absolutely amazing. The visit to Mercury […]

Messenger succesfully enters Mercury orbit

As reported earlier on Thursday morning, the Messenger NASA spacecraft was scheduled for an evening jump into Mercury’s orbit through a tricky maneuver which involved a “burn” – essentially “riding its brakes” by firing its main thruster – to slow the spacecraft enough to be captured by Mercury’s gravity. At 8:45 p.m. ET, the procedure […]

Messenger spacecraft to enter Mercury orbit

After a six year journey in which it traveled over 6 billion miles, the Messenger spacecraft is finally anticipated to enter Mercury’s orbit in a tricky maneuver which is scheduled today, which should mark the first man-made object to orbit the tiny planet. The goal of the mission is to provide scientists with data on […]

'The Spider' On Mercury: MESSENGER Mercury flyby

MESSENGER is a spacecraft which recently made a flyby near Mercury and it gave scientists a whole new perspective over the planet. Researchers are amazed by the wealth of images and data which show a surprising diversity of geological processes which took and are still taking place and a very different magnetosphere from the one […]
