Astronauts aboard the ISS are brewing more than just discoveries — they’re testing how sake ferments in space.
Multiple private space companies are now vying for their proposals to become the ISS's successor.
The unexpected delay raises serious concerns about Boeing's Starliner capsule.
The ISS will be old enough to retire by the end of this decade. Here's what will happen once it's out of service.
New study exposes alarming contaminants aboard the ISS.
Private space flight is up for a new important milestone.
Everybody is fine and we've put it back in place.
From this vantage point, the ISS looks like a X-Wing fighter from Star Wars.
Space: the final petri dish.
The crew was in no danger but the ISS is showing its age.
Hopefully it will be fixed soon.
Even though they might be exposed to outer space for years, bacteria can still survive on the surface of a spacecraft.
It can covert radioactive energy into chemical energy
The leg regenerates the battery every time it touches the ground. It's also much quieter than existing prosthethics.
The findings suggest that astronauts can safely grow leaf vegetables in space -- or at least lettuce for now.
Bacteria have made their way to the space station's water, but there's no reason to fear.
If you want a seat, you'd best save up $50 million by 2024
The wine is part of an experiment on aging that could improve food storage in the future.
A group of researchers at NASA is preparing for the final steps to launch the Española chile pepper into space in November.
Could this be the key to ensuring that the ISS lives long and prosper?
That looks like a lot of fun!
Don't be quick to blame NASA for this though!
"Watch out, America!"
Glue and duct tape saved the day...
Few problems will persist after a generous application of stabbings.
It should be ready by the mid-2020s.
Because it would be dumb.
It's the earliest date this is possible but this could leave American astronauts stranded on the ground.
We really do contaminate everything we touch -- and space is no exception.
Microbes seem at home in the space lab.
NASA just wins, can everyone stop with the fidget spinner videos now?
No reason to worry, just an 8-ton space station crashing down on Earth.
It's the best place to get lost -- and trust me, you will.
One small step for bread, one giant leap for mankind.
Astronauts will be installing a new module on the ISS for space taxis.
British astronaut Tim Peake ran the London Marathon on a treadmill aboard the International Space Station.
Beam is basically a huge inflatable structure which is easy to carry and provides ample living space for astronauts once it expands. Props to SpaceX for yet another successful Dragon mission, but also to Bigelow Aerospace -- a company which might become a household name in the coming decade if their plan works: build the first space hotel!
SpaceX will launch as early as April 8 an inflatable habitat module destined for the International Space Station.
When researchers started raising 48 bacteria species aboard the International Space Station, they weren’t really sure what to expect. They wanted to see how the microorganisms would adapt to living in microgravity, but one species hasn’t only adapted – it’s doing better than on Earth. According to a recent study, Bacillus safensis JPL-MERTA-8-2 – a strain […]
Astronaut Scott Kelly returned to planet Earth on Thursday, after a landing in which everything went smoothly, as expected.
There's a now a third private space entity that's been screened and granted permission to ferry cargo to and fro the International Space Station. Joining SpaceX and Orbital will be the Sierra Nevada Corp. which plans to use a reusable winged craft that looks like a mini-shuttle. The design allows for a soft landing on a runway, instead of dropping the ocean, that might prove more effective for retrieving sensitive scientific instruments.
NASA just released their famous pictures taken from the International Space Station in 2015. The images were shot by astronauts aboard the ISS and the list was selected by NASA Johnson Space Center’s Earth Observations team. It wasn’t an easy job with many bedazzling photos fighting for the top positions. 1. Lake Chad and a Bodele Dust […]
For the first time in history, the UK has a representative on the International Space Station. This morning, British astronaut Tim Peake made his first visit to the station, alongside two seasoned: Russia’s Yuri Malenchenko and NASA’s Tim Kopra. It was a flawless launch, as you can see below. Malechenko had to take manual control after the automated […]
Veteran astronaut Scott Kelly launched in March, 2015 aboard a Soyuz rocket for a record breaking one-year stay at the ISS. Instead of three to six months, Kelly along with his Russian colleague, Mikhail Korniyenko, will spend 12 months so scientists can assess how his body responds to the stress. For instance, we know that living in microgravity atrophies muscles and deteriorates vision. Kelly isn't too worried, though. When not busy operating the International Space Station, Kelly is engaged in one of the most pleasing hobbies (for those of us living back on Earth, that is): space photography. Here are just a couple of his most amazing shots shared by Kelly on his facebook or twitter account. He updates these very frequently, even a couple of times a day, so be sure to tune in for some more gems.
As we were telling you yesterday, astronauts aboard the International Space Station were preparing for the first meal that involved space-grown veggies. It's a remarkable moment, which might pave the way for future space exploration... and it's delicious!
Back in 2013, we were telling you about about a small agricultural project on the International Space Station - now, the space veggies are ready to be harvested; for the first time, astronauts will be eating food grown in space.
It took more than was expected, but the three astronauts set for the International Space Station docked with the International Space Station at 10:46 p.m. E.T. You can watch them here: The rocket had a successful launch at 5:02 p.m. EDT (2102 GMT) to experienced Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and rookie astronauts Kjell Lindgren with NASA and Japan’s Kimiya […]
Dylan O’Donnell, an amateur photographer, took one of the luckiest shots ever: the International Space Station past the moon. Any astro buff would be envious.
Today was a bad day for science after SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket exploded shortly after taking off from Cape Canaveral, Florida. This is the second successive botched mission whose goal was to re-supply the International Space Station, and the third in the past 8 eight months. The Dragon Capsule was supposed to reach the space station with 5,200 pounds of space station cargo, including the first docking port designed for future commercial crew capsules and the custom tailored Microsoft HoloLenses for virtual reality.
This weekend, SpaceX is scheduled to deliver cargo and other much needed supplies to the International Space Station via its Dragon capsule. Among the supplies is a surprise for the astronauts on board: the latest high tech gadget from Microsoft, the HoloLens. If you missed ZME Science's feature of the HoloLens, well you're in for a treat if this is the first time you hear about it. Basically, the tech involves using holographic computing which enables you to mix virtual reality with ..actual reality. Holograms following in your kitchen, weather reports on your coffee cup. Really, anything is possible with the HoloLens, let alone in the final frontier: space.
