Most often than not, when scientists present their measurements, simulations or hypotheses, these need to be followed by a statistical analysis. Broadly speaking, a statistical analysis is a handy tool or set of tools that helps us see if there’s a genuine difference between two or more things that have been measured. Think of a coin. Toss it 100 times and it might come out 52 times tails, and 48 times heads. There’s a difference in occurrence, sure. Is it significant? Not really. Moreover, once you increase the number of tosses to 1,000, maybe even 10,000 it will become even clearer that it’s random. This is why some decades ago, inspired or not, many journals started requesting scientists to make null hypothesis testing, otherwise their work wouldn’t be published.
The null hypothesis, H0, is a hypothesis which the researcher tries to disprove, reject or nullify. It’s as the opposite of the alternative hypothesis, H1. The ‘null’ often refers to the common view of something, while the alternative hypothesis is what the researcher really thinks is the cause of a phenomenon. Some see H0 as an anchor, since an experiment’s conclusion always refers to the null, rejecting or accepting H0 rather than H1. To test for H0 you have to use statistics to see how probable it is (nothing’s ever certain in science, it seems) that your results prove or disprove the null hypothesis. This is where significance comes in.
Say you’re a medical researcher and you’re working on a new drug. In clinical trials, you need to assess whether your drug actually works, and the effects you might see are not in fact the consequence of random events or coincidences. Traditionally, in research, if the stats test shows that you’d need to repeat an experiment 20 times in order to have found your result at random, it gets the scientist’s seal of approval. In other words, the probability (“p”, or “the p value”) of such a result occurring is less than 1 in 20 or “p < 0.05”, as it is often found in papers. If stats show p > 0.05 then you say any difference is insignificant. But what if you’re really, really close to 0.05? Well, some researchers get overly creative at this point. Got 0.06 or 0.07? Let’s just call it “approaching but not reaching significance” or “barely escaped statistical significance”. Some might think I’ve lost my mind, but I’m merely quoting things you sometimes see in published papers. Probable Error, a blog authored by a statistician in epidemiology & public health, was diligent enough to compile a whole list of such hilarious oddities. Enjoy! But remember, these are still not significant (or could be since, after all, 0.05 is freaking arbitrary!). Har, har.
