Coronavirus cases and fatalities in Pakistan

The number is based on confirmed diagnostic tests. It is very likely that the true number of COVID-19 cases is higher as many cases are asymptomatic.

New COVID-19 cases and fatalities per day in Pakistan

This is a good indicator of “flattening the curve” — when there is a steady decreasing trend, it is an indicator that the spread of the disease is slowing down.

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is an illness caused by a coronavirus. Human coronaviruses are common and are typically associated with mild illnesses, similar to the common cold.

COVID-19 symptoms

Symptoms of human coronaviruses may be very mild or more serious, such as:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Difficulty breathing

Symptoms may take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to the virus.

Coronaviruses are most commonly spread from an infected person through:

  • respiratory droplets when you cough or sneeze
  • close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands
  • touching something with the virus on it, then touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands

These viruses are not known to spread through ventilation systems or through water.

The best way to prevent the spread of infections is to:

  • wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, especially with unwashed hands;
  • avoid close contact with people who are sick;
  • cough and sneeze into your sleeve and not your hands; and
  • stay home if you are sick to avoid spreading illness to others.

Coronavirus Outbreak in Pakistan

Initial stages

The first confirmed case was on February 2020. The diagnostic test of a student in Karachi came positive, after the student had returned from Iran (another country suffering from a severe coronavirus outbreak).

Religion has been linked to the coronavirus in Pakistan. A Tablighi Jamaat religious congregation taking place in Lahore in early March 2020 became a coronavirus super-spreader. Subsequent tests accounted for 27% of cases in the country by late April.

Coronavirus Measures

The public has been advised to avoid all mass gatherings, including religious gatherings. All schools and universities have been temporarily closed, and both federal and provincial governments have implemented measures to contain and mitigate the spread of the virus.

Border closures were imposed, localized quarantine areas were defined, travel restriction were imposed, and ultimately, all public events were banned. Pakistan army troops were deployed starting Monday, March 23, to help provincial governments effectively implement their measures to contain the coronavirus.

Pakistan started vaccine trials in collaboration with Sinopharm a Chinese pharmaceutical company in April 2020.

On 24 March, the Prime Minister approved a Rs1.2 trillion economic relief package. Of this, a total of Rs150 billion was allotted for low-income groups, particularly laborers while 280 billion rupees ($1.76 billion) was assigned for wheat procurement. Loan interest payments for exporters were deferred temporarily.
